My combat shotgun is one of those "unlimited" legendary ones which means I keep trying to reload it for no reason. Since when are shotguns long range weapons? In any event, I'm perfectly fine with the range since I use it for close combat anyway. It works exactly the same and the limitations on ammo haven't changed any either. I rely upon a sniper rifle and use my combat shotgun for backup, just as I have in every one of these games since Fallout 2 (and probably for 1 and 2 as well). Melee for bugs, ghouls etc, Shotgun for cqb, Gauss for long range, and Missile Launcher for boss enemies. Rifleman is probably the best weapon perk because it benefits most weapons, you can use a shotgun for cqb and a rifle for long range, all with 1 weapon skill investment. I buy Fusion Cores with the rest of the money. I usually sell all my useless stuff and buy all the ammo I need (I only use 3 types of ammo, Shells, 2mm Cartridge and Missile) so I always keep making caps. Since money is useless and infinite, just buy all the shotgun ammo from traders. Scrounger is a dumb perk, even dumber than nightvision. I had more than 100k caps on my previous playthrough. There is nothing to buy anyway, money is useless in this game. I never ever invested in Scrounger and never had ammo problems. Reasons why I won't use shotguns in Fallout 4.
